Some cars just have odd-sounding idles, maybe the old muffler just masked the sound?
How's it running? Could be a little after-fire in the manifold if rich.
How many miles? Could be time for a valve-job, the old dollar bill over the tailpipe would let you know if an exhaust valve isn't sealing fully.
