83SC - funny you should post this question, i went through this myself about 3 months ago...I am a purist as well, have an 88 carrera with linen interior and a leather wrapped knob...my knob crapped out as well, so, being a purist and too cheap to pay for the $73 Tweeks replacement knob (which I found out later had been discontinued in linen,) I went to my local thrift store (Goodwill, Salvation Army, you know) with the old dry rotted leather off my knob. I found there, for $1.50, a ladies old leather purse that matched my leather EXACTLY! Went home and with about 1/2 hour of cutting the purse into a pattern and creative sewing on my wife's machine, voila!!! A new leather cover, already broken in! I rolled the new leather on my knob (shift knob that is!) like a condom, a little hot glue to hold it in place, and she is good for another 50K miles! Beats the hell out of the $73 Tweeks version, and now I have a story for my grandkids!
