The range can be from a few feet or up to say like satellite tracking.
Generally the range is a few hundred feet. Start putting trees or walls in between and it goes down significantly. The power that these things receive the more they put out. Up to the point where they burn up.
I agree with you on child molesters though.

Walls degrade 802.11 significantly. However I doubt it’s your access point. It’s likely your wireless card in your laptop.
