Hey, I have a similar issue with idle on my 81 SC Targa. The weird thing is the idle speed seems to have as much to do with the ambient temp as with engine temp. My car has new injectors, a rebuilt warm up regulator, and has had the fuel pressure tested to ensure the pump is working properly. With the ambient temp below 70F, the car seems to idle constantly at around 2200 RPM...consumes a lot of fuel, too. I'm getting around 14MPG around town and 20 on the highway, and my car is basically stock. When my mechanic adjusted the RPMs before, the car wouldn't idle correctly when warm (less than 600 RPM). Even now, when I start it in the AM (temps in the low 50s), it starts fine, then the idle drops to about 300 RPM. After a short time (or after I throttle it a couple of times, if I'm impatient), the idle settles in around 1000-1200. After driving for a minute or so, the idle is up around 2200. I don't know if this is related or not, but the temp guage very seldom gets more than a hair above the box on the lower end. I was wondering if the warmup system is controlled by engine oil temp and that perhaps I have a bad oil temp thermostat causing the problem? I've only had the car a little over a year and am still learning about how its various systems function. Any advice would be appreciated.
