On my track car, I have a Forge BOV, MAP sensor, and a hard pipe with cone filter. Mine vents to atmosphere since my pipe has no place to recirculate into the intake side of the turbo.
It makes that cool racecar sound when I shift. All is good when under pressure (throttle/boost). However, I do not like it when having to sit on the line (no vacuum/no boost). It causes the car to buck a bit and can unsettle the car going into some turns.
As stated earlier, the pressure vents back to the intake side of the turbo to keep the spindle spun up. This keeps the system pressurized. It doesn't hurt the car to run vented to atmosphere. I would think you would have some driveability issues for a street car since you are not driving like it a track car where you are either on full boost or on the brakes and not very often in-between.
If you want the cool sound, that's how you do it. I don't think you want to attempt this with a stock airbox setup since you will be screwing up the computer as stated earlier though.
