I know this doesn't seem to make sense, but the book I have says to put the rubber around the glass, then lube the trim groove and install the trim leaving gap between the ends of the trim. Then install the whole thing using the pull chord technique. So, the trim goes in before you mount the windshield in the car. Seems odd, but it worked for me, although it was a real pain to get the trim in, and keep it in place while I mounted the glass. I had to gently force it back into the groove in places when I was done mounting. I used glycerin for lube and it was a mess to work with, and a little too slick I think.
Maybe others will chime in with more/better advice.
