aluminum cases and power

I keep reading that the early aluminum cases, 66', were a pretty good lot. Few case problems. Is there a way to re-build one of these early 2.0's, and increase the performance substantially without going bankrupt? I've been told that the opportunity costs are best served by getting a 3.0 or 3.2 for transplant. Is it most peoples experience that the cost of building-up one of these older engines is just not worth the effort and money? Any advise on re-building the 66' greatly appreciated. I know that there's no substitute for displacement. but with nostalgia in mind, and trying to keep the original pieces together. ?? Thank you in advance!
