The dams sit naturally on the shoulder formed by the fuel channels cast into the bottom of the float bowl. If you didn't grind away the fuel pick up, then the dam would sit right in top of that. I estimate 1 cm, but it's been a few years since I did the job.
I cut the dam out of 10 thou brass shim stock, trimmed it as tight as possible to follow the contours of the float bowl, and then JB welded them in. I wsh I had pictyures, but I didn't have a digital camera back then. I promist I''ll photograph them next time the carbs are apart.
