My wife and I have been married for 2.5 years, and together for about 7, and we have a 5yr old son.
We got married at the local court house, with a couple of friends and relatives present. Whenever someone asks about why we waited, why are we doing it now, etc, we answered health insurance. I'm self employed and disaster prone, and at the time my wife had a job with health ins. Since then we've enjoyed tax and other benefits as well.
Our rings are ultra cheapo stainless steel, $18.00 for both I think. Her engagement ring was a little more special (had to get the diamond in Malta, through a broker). We are both active and don't wear our rings in the dirt (farming, gardening, playing in lake). She wears her eng. ring sometimes, and her wedding ring occasionally. She has mentioned that she gets hit on regardless of what is on her finger, or her arm (me), for that matter. I never get hit on with my ring, but then I don't have tits.
We view the rings as important symbols to each other, not to other people, and just because they aren't on our fingers does not mean they don't count or have lost personal value.

When we are going someplace together, and notice that we both happen to be wearing the metal, we exchange meaningful smiles.
