I took classes with Betty Friedan while in graduate school. In fact, feminism from a male's point of view was a subject she and I discussed. At that time, she might have concluded the feminist movement was imploding on itself, because fundamentally, men are different than women, and men cannot be forced toward what is not in their nature. Toward the issue of competition, what feminism ignores is men are challenged daily by other men, and feel the last place they need more challenge is from a woman beyond certain forums such as the workplace.
Friedan understood this new-found strength in women, as put-on and PC-boasted as it was, was having an ill-effect on men. Men did not want to marry, nor have long-term relationships with women. There also was more violence against women by men.
Thus, in a way, feminism had (no pun intended) made its own bed and now had to sleep in it. Feminism was beginning to see the dark side of men which it, in part, inflamed.
What's even darker is the idea men are forgetting what is to be men. Never in my life have I met more emasculated pussy men than now, which I do chalk up to a lot of goose-feeding of political correctness and just plain being told how wrong it is for a guy to be a guy.
Of course, those emasculated men who are married invariably have children, some who are boys, and are raised favoring the dominant person in the marriage - the mother - and for no unapparent reason, are called "******" in school.
I think it was the editor of Ms. magazine who said on the news that society has to now take care of the little boys. Feminism, commercialism and political correctness has caused such concentration on empowering women and fortifying little girls that huge societal rift has occurred, which has caused the boys to be left behind in school, career counseling and other areas of society.
