Andy as I recall installed the complete 944 Turbo motor in his black car. It is a nice setup.
Now Speaking from experience - boosting the 944 NA is straight forward. The subject has been discussed at length on most major boards and you will typically get the standard it costs to much, buy a 951, you will spend 3x as much, etc...
The 944 NA vs 944 Turbo motor - not a lot of differences that would limit boost under 1 bar.
If you are going to run more than 6 PSI you might want to swtich to stainless valves in the head - I have gone over 8 with the stock setup.
As for pistons - you could install forged units - but then you get into sleeves or coatings - if coating then swain is the best bet.
Of course if going to that trouble - stroke it making a 2.7 is only an issue of 100 vs. 104mm postons - but does require sleeves.
Now as for the stock unit - if you didnt want to changes pistons but wanted to freshen you engine up - you can get the pistons coated - again swain - very boost and heat resistant.
But lets stick to bolt on mods - turbo or supercharger?
Turbo since thats the subjet at hand - ok:
3 options:
1- log or collector style manifold and turbo on passenger side
2- crossover setup - as seen in factory 944 Turbo - you do not have to use 944 turbo bits here - you can do your own - some work involved but easy enough for someone with some skills.
3- rear mount - not recommended for the naysayer or doubter - but will work - also not for the close minded. But is proven to work. I should know I did it. No its not as laggy as you think.
So you will need a way to get hot exhaust air to turbo, oil to and from turbo and to and from engine - oil lines, and a way to feed charged air to engine.
Since we are talking moderate boost even a smallish ray jay turbo would work or a T3 as seen on the Dodge 2.2 and 2.5 motors. 2.5 exhaust from down pipe back.
For fuel - that is easy - low tech or high tech? I can explain either
Timing simple - 1/2 degree of retard per 1 psi.
Of course their are solutions their as well.
Thats it in a nut shell.
Now as for suspension, trans, and brakes - you can bolt on upgrades. cost varies - trans has its limits - thats a seperate arguement. Just dont drag race and abuse trans, as for limits and how long will last with more power - debatable.
Brakes - wilwood upgrade from Travis over at rennbay is the best.
Suspension - whatever you want.
It should cost you more to upgrade suspension and brakes depending on what you do than to turbocharge a NA.
Of course hard core big $$$ - is usually labor -- if you can DIY you save an then it is a very affordable option.
As for sell your na and buy a 951 - thats debateable - most 951s need work especially to make more power and cost more to maintain.
For a fun car with a little more power boost is a great way to go
