I beleive you can get just the bearings replaced if you take the alternator into a reputable rebuild centre.I made the mistake of buying a new unit $$$$$ my wrench was a rip off artist!!. The charging light kept illuminating after the new alternator and later I found my fan rubbing which may have been part of the problem!
I would also check that the fan housing itself has not been squashed by overtightening of the band that holds it. Mine was cracked causing the rubbing. I had to replace fan housing more $$$$$.
