I used to have a 76 911S and had the bearings fail in the alternator (fan hit the housing). I took everything apart and saw the alternator had SKF bearings. Called around to a few shops and found the bearings at a washing machine service center! Go figure. I think I paid about $10 and was up and running again. This was back in 97 and the car is still running with the same alternator (saw it this weekend at the an autocross). It was a pretty easy fix overall.
