rear seat back bolts

the previous owner on my car removed the seat backs. I've got the seat back, and I've got two bolts/washers for them... I was wondering if there was an easier way for those bolts to be pushed into the holes for them. I've tried squishing the seat leather in as far as I can.. it just doesn't want to budge.

they dont go the other way, do they? from behind the rear wheel well into the car? the head of the bolt is in the car, right?

granted now that i think about it, i've only tried this with the seats up... if I fold them down, will that make it seasier?

I can get them lined up alright, just getting the clearance to push that bolt through is becoming a chore...

see pictures... any hints will be appreciated.
also, am I missing any hardware? I have a bolt, a nut, and a washer for each side.
