I suspect you did - they told you pretty much everything but his name. V was a homosexual or other undesirable scooped up during the early cleansing raids, and sent to Larkhill where he and others were experimented on with the drug later used to fake the terrorist attack that brought the Chancellor and his cronies to power. He escaped during the explosion at Larkhill but was horribly mutilated. He spent the next 20 years tracking down and killing everyone responsible, with the film following the final year of his vendetta.

I like the film, but then I don't take it as a political documentary. Alan Moore wrote the graphic novel as an indictment of England under Margaret Thatcher (whom he dissed in pretty much everything he wrote at the time), but people have seen some parallels with post-911 America and the Patriot Act, kind of like people saw all sorts of religious themes in The Matrix.
