Have you done any investigation as to what the noise is/was?
I'm thinking it could possibly be in the fan housing or the fan pulley or alternator rubbing on something. Other than that, it may be at the clutch end of the crank.
I once had a fan come loose and it rubbed on the fan shroud causing a hell of a noise. I looked down the timing cover hole and I saw metal shavings....
I only had ot tighten 3 bolts and was back in business. I ended up using blue locktite on those three bolts when I got the chance.
It may be worth a shot to do some investigation.
