They're very difficult to remove without any residual traces left behind. It can get expensive as well.

In one of the military units I was in we had a guy, former marine, with tats on both arms finish his undergrad degree and get accepted into med school. He had to wear long sleeved shirts winter or summer while he saw patients. That was in the late '80's, don't know whether he's had them removed by now or not.

The latest thing is laser removal, which takes time and money. Also, the ease of removal depends on the age of the tats as well. Be careful, you don't want to do something that will require a skin graft later.
