Are the valve covers new?
If not, they could be slightly warped.
To avoid draining the oil, jack up one side and carefully stuff in jack stands.
Remove the valve cover with a pan to catch a small amount of oil. Check the mating suface carefully with a straight edge and strong light. Be very critical.
If the covers are warped they can be resurfaced by any competent auto machine shop.
Of course if both covers are warped you will need to drain the oil.
