I take no sides, but if one is happy with the "status quo", as defined by "conservative' in the dictionary, then there would be far less reason for feeling depressed. But, right or wrong, if one desires change and it either never comes or comes slowly, this can cause all kinds of anxiety or "agita".
I would not doubt at all that the real "movers and shakers" of history had a high degree of emotional/mental problems. It just seems logical.
