Back in 1968 the FN FAL was banned from importation because it was considered to be a Machine-Gun. However the ones allready in the Country were Grandfathered in, and there was a cutoff serial number in effect.
A friend of mine had several FALs that fell in the grey area of serial numbers..the ATF came and took the guns away. My friend sued to get the guns back...The attorney for the govt claimed that they were machine guns and thus illegal to own. My friends attorney said whats the difference between serial number xxxx and xxx1 they are identical guns yet one is considered to be a Machine -Gun and the other a Semi- Auto. My friend won, the Judge admonished the ATF in a harsh tone not to bring anymore frivious suits into court regarding the matter...and that is why the FAL is still available on the commercial market.
