I will be surprised of the 55 mph national speed limit is not re-instated soon to reduce the consumption rates.

If every individual in this country reduced his or her gas consuption by 5%, we would see $2 a gallon again. that is all it would take. If the supply (refinining capacity) stayed the same and the demand fell 5% it would make a huge difference.
But it won't happen. Some will cut back, maybe even many will, but the total demand will not fall that much.
