281 is definitely the way to go regardless of how fast you want to go--35 is a bear--horrible.
I used to drive my 993 from Dallas to Austin on 281 and you can see for miles ahead, which inspires great confidence that you're not going to come up on a slow-moving truck or whatever.
Because I used to live in SW Austin the 281 route was only about 15 minutes slower than 35 running without traffic or construction (very rare).
Be aware of cops through Marble Falls, which is just north of 71.
