I just went through this as well. If you are going plasma, the Panasonic professional-series (business/industrial) HD displays are the best out there IMO. A close second would be the Pionner Elite models. Some think they are the best, but I think the Panasonic prof. have a slight edge, and they are cheaper.
The best Panasonic consumer plasma is the "Onyx" IMO.

The panasonic professional-series model #'s are:
TH-42PHD8UK (42")
TH-37PHD8UK (37")

The panasonic consumer-series "Onxy" model # is:
TH-42XVS3OUP (42")

Pioneer Elite model:
PRO-930HD (42", marketed as 43")

But, after all that reasearch/viewing, I ended up going with a 52" Panasonic rear-projection HD LCD (PT-52LCX65). The reasons being that I really wanted a bigger screen, and it cost about half of what the 50" plasmas did. Also, I wasn't too conscerned about saving space (although it's pretty darn slim for it's size), and wouldn't have mounted the plasma on the wall anyway.
