Research showed me that in my area, with COMCAST, I must use their "converter" (tuner), so an HD TV will not use its tuner at all. I bought a 50" Vizio HD Plasma monitor from Costco for the cost of a 42" plasma TV (less than $2500).

Ah yes, that reminds me of another reason I went with that particular rear proj. LCD model (noted above): It has a built in "cable card" reader, so you can receive cable/HD sources without a "set-top box". You just need to call your cable provider to see if they offer cable card service. It also has an HDMI input so external sources w/HDMI output (HD receivers, up-scaling DVD players, etc.) can be used to their full potential.
