I've just changed mine, it's slightly over to the passenger side hidden inside a rubber boot. Push back the rubber boot, mine disintigrated, to expose the nut.
I asume you are using the string/cord method to replace it. The route of the cable is thro the lower part of the tunnel so if you do a straight pull from front of tunnel (by pedals) push down on the cable to encourage it to stay low in the tunnel and you will get past the handbrake crap easily.
