The black bit is just a lump until it is cooled to below its' supercritical temp. When it does, in this case in liquid nitrogen, becomes superconductive (no resistence to electrical flow) and magnetic. The round disk is another magnet.

If these can be produced on a large scale, mag-lev trains may happen.
