The numbers that stuck out to me in the article were a 50% high school drop-out rate, 25% incarceration rate, and 70% unemployment rate amoung black men. Those numbers are outrageous! While "the poor will always be with us", I don't think that even that sentiment can fully explain these numbers. Neither can racism.
I think the (lack of) sense of personal responsibility among black men explains the most. When you go into adult life convienently blaming racism for your believed destiny as a failure, there is no motivation to try. Fatalism is killing black America. I think that entitlement programs, while creating a "floor " for some, also create a "ceiling" for many more.
