And they believed that what they were doing was for the greatness of the Fatherland. Considering the way Germany was ravaged after WW1. We are using the benefit of hindsight to point out where all this nationlist/race pride took them.

The adverage German had no idea where Hitler was headed with all of this. All that being said, the Pope still joined.

People look at these things like.... man has split the atom and since I am one of those men, therefore I can split atoms...needless to say that is far from the truth.
We need that stupid/fearless/dangerous/uncoventional thinking/different than I am, gene to propel All of us foward. That same gene has improved the lives of everyone and destroyed the lives of many.
