I can think of no other single institution in history than organized religion that has resulted in so much bigotry, hatred, suffering and death. "Morality" exists outside of belief in any religion or god. I really don't see what religious beliefs provide other than a delusional "feelgood" to people either looking for (1) some purpose or meaning to their otherwise meaningless and empty existences or (2) some comfort in dealing with the inevitability of our own deaths.
It's time we as a society moved past the ridiculous notions of the past. If we want to promote a civilized and "moral" society, that's fine. Structure, order and rules are good. Respect for fellow man is good. Religion accomplishes virtually none of these while pretending to do so.
Sorry, but when things outlive their usefulness it's time for them to go. I think religion outlived its "usefulness" centuries ago - and even then it was only "useful" in reinforcing the power bases of the aristocracies in power.
