Well, if anything is less than intellectual, it is the premise that hippies somehow brought the country down.
I knew hippies when I was a kid, and all they cared about was smoking dope and surfing. But they were smart enough to also go to college to avoid that certain black smear on U.S. history called Vietnam.
But that's beside the point of my offer to nine_one_4 the parallel of the 60s which are the 50s; a time where every man, woman and child was a cookie-cut of some mold that was prim, proper, and never second-guessed America or the U.S. government. At that time we:
1) Entered the cold war - an economic fiasco.
2) Perfected nuclear weaponry.
3) Entered Korea
4) Began plans to take over the war in Vietnam.
5) Prejudice ran rampid but unspoken of in the 50s.
6) Women had no right to choose.
7) You had a maniacal senator ruining the lives of average Americans by persecuting them as "Reds," when indeed many were not.
In the 60s you had:
1) The Beatles
2) The Stones
3) Stoners
4) Lotsa sex
5) More sex
6) The Doors, Zombies and Hendrix
7) More sex
8) More pot
9) Lots of anti-war rallies
10) Cool poetry, writing, art and film.
Hmmm...maybe you're right - all that culture, music and ****ing had to have brought down the U.S. from its graciously ignorant post WW II state.
