But until the exclusive portion of the patent ran out on Tagamet (is that the drug?) and then went over the counter, the doctor was ignored. Only when Tagamet went over the counter did the medical community start treating ulcers with antibiotics.

Ulcers associated with bacterial infections are treated with a combination of antibiotics and a drug to reduce acid production, such as an H2-receptor antagonist (like Tagamet) or a protein-pump inhibitor.
