Question strut inserts

Replacing the front strut inserts on my '74 911. Using 101 projects as a guide. With the top nut removed, the dust cover and strut wouldn't pull down. Put a ratchet strap around the dust cover and hooked it to the hub. The pressure pulled the top rubber bushing through the mount hole, and easily retracted the strut, but the threaded portion of the strut rod is still in the rubber bushing. It looks like there may be a metal sleeve in the rubber bushing and it may be rusted to the strut rod, but I really can't tell for sure. I have soaked the assembly in WD40 but haven't put any heat on the strut rod. I assume I can figure out how to put the rubber bushing back in the mount and I don't want to damage it. Has anyone overcome this problem before. Any input is appreciated.
