The Cassion song was never the "official" song of the US Army. In 1952, new lyrics were applied to the music which Sousa wrote for the original Cassion song. The music, with new lyrics, became the official Army song. The
official version has never contained the "hill and dale" lyrics that you mention - however I agree that it leaves a bit to be desired as a true "fighting song".

I think the official statement when I enlisted was, "You're in the Army now, dumbass."
We were not called soldier until after graduation from basic. During basic, it was either "boot" or "recruit".
VINMAN... you're right. Marines definately have us beat on pride.
