I guess its all about money these days. Trying to appeal to the vast portfolio-carrying, shirt and tie wearing, former BMW /Mercedes crowd - does not demand a racing history. Former or current. Today´s 996/997 presumptive buyers has no knowledge of and don´t give a damn about racing/passion. They just want a cool, fast car to make an impression. Trading in for a new every two years.
Porsche need to focus on that kind of customer. And in the light of today´s rough competition, they are probably right in the long term.
Personally /emotionally, I think they are barking up the wrong tree..
Secondly, as stated above, they apparently were having trouble with reliability of the racer. What a sad story.
