Think about the people involved. Penske and Porsche.
If ANYBODY goes prepared, it's Mr Penske. I imagine that the deal was set up right fron the begining to not include LeMans, and to acheive the reliablility and performance before taking on such a large undertaking.
AS for the 911, Half the ranks are 911s! Farnbacher was leading for a bit I think.
While Porsche might not be currently writing record books at the pinnacle of motorsports right now, they are perhaps the most involved in their customer and young driver programs.
No other manufacturer has the range of real race ready cars for sale that Posche does.
Love it or hate it, the Cayenne seems to be helping Porsche in profits and financial stability, and products like the new Cayman S, GT2, 3 and turbo probably owe their existance to Porsche's financial strategy. On top of that, they are a dying breed in automtive corporations: independant.
