I don’t see any “hate” here, certainly no hatred of free speech.
The very article you quote has this:

Lichtenstein said that position was supported by two decisions by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in 2000 and 2003.

Have you heard about this thing called separation of church and state? It says, among other things, that government funded schools cannot sponsor religion, and since this was a school sponsored speech, that is what was happening.
I suppose you could say “liberals hate the joining of church and state.” That would be a more accurate title for this story.
