I think your IT folks are full of baloney. I think they were allowing anonymous internet usage, and now they want to lock things down, or do auditing so they can see who is surfing what, so they changed the proxy to require authetication.
Either way though, if you are successfully logging into the network, it should not be prompting you for credentials.
Sorry were are all being so vague, but we need all sorts of details if you want a real answer.
What operating system are you running and what service packs are installed?
What is the proxy product?
Do you run any third party firewall software?
