This is only because Hitler set out to destroy the cultural symbolism of many ubiquitous religeous symbols. The swastika is only one of the religeous symbols that has become tarnished through use by the Nazis. Others are the iron cross, and the thunderbolts of Zeus (used as the symbol of the the SS).

The swastika cropped up on every continent of the world thousands of years ago seemingly independently. Though there are theories about how it may have been transferred through culteral interaction, it is most widely thought that the swastika came from patterns in woven baskets. The swastika was (is) use to represent rebirth, infinity, the interrelated (interwoven) nature of all things. It is still used both as decoration, and as a religeous symbol by Hindus and Buddhists, and was used by Christians, Jews, Muslims, Native Americans, and many others.
