Like many European nations, the French are actually very conservative and consistent in economics and policy, but more liberal in terms of "personal freedoms".
I think they probably regard the US's "make up the rules as we go along" therory as hypocritical.
This 4th of July, let's remember that without the distracting attritional-assistance of the French navy, along with prez. Washingtons breaking of an unspoken holiday truce, we would still all be colonial subject to oppressive British taxation laws.
