My Uncle, Gordon Donkin, got a LOT closer to B-17's than he wanted to, as a driver of one. But that was back in the 40's. Once home? The ONLY way he boarded an aircraft again was in order to visit his older sister, living in Australia. That was back in the early 1970's. He did talk fondly of being invited to a cockpit during that trip.
