I'm not wild about it, but keep in mind that France participated for their own selfish reasons, not from a position of sympathy for Americans seceding from Britain. That, in fact, was a concern for Franklin when he was in France negotiating French assistance. Would they help America throw out a ruling monarch? In the end it was the old, "the enemy of my enemy, is my friend" philosophy that won out. The French monarchy didn't realize, apparently, that they only had a llittle over 7 years remaining after the Battle of Yorktown.
