Fuel injected cars cannot run with the pump disconnected and not producing pressure. Sounds to me like the fuel pressure regulator has failed and allowing excessive pressure, making the engine run too rich.
Try checking the fuel pressure with a gauge. If the regulator has failed then also replace the damper too.
Before SoCal says anything: Have you replaced the timing and balance shaft belts, fuel pump relay and are up to date with the maintenance?
