Postscript: I was able to find a complete used assembly on ebay for $58. This was considerably less worn than the one I had. I did a backlash check on both, and found that the original assembly exceeded the spec in some areas by a factor of nearly two, while the replacement fell within spec. The replacement also showed some wear of the teeth as did the original, but to a lesser extent. I also examined a third assembly that had a similar tooth surface condition. With this behind me, I noticed that the assembly photographed in Wayne's book looked the same way. So, you can see this wear pattern and still have an assembly in spec, and the pattern seems to be quite common. I'm glad that for $58 I found something that is in spec.
