Go to a shop where they sell lots of cigars, so that they are fresh. Take one out of the box and squeeze it. It should be firm but flexable. If does not and feels hard or does not rebound back then its old and dry.
Have not seen many counterfits but hear that they are out there.
I usually pay about $20 for a box of three of the D #4's. This is the duty free in Beirut, London or Cairo and about the best prices I have found anywhere.
