Hah, and they've loosened the spec to ease installation as of a few years ago. Be glad you didn't try to install an early set. Far worse.
One of the few times I just gave up in frustration and had to sleep on it. Got up the next morning and did just as you did.
Went right on.

Great product otherwise. If you did it w/o lube, then there was no chance. I've put new ones on with lube, but without drilling, w/o much trouble (but certainly still very tight)
