People use it to P2P programs, like the old Kazaa. I use it to download television programs while flying overseas.
When your choice on the tube is "andy of mayberry" in Japanese or Farsi, downloading last weeks CSI or Prison Break and watching it on your laptop is a life saver.
Jack installed Bearshare on his computer and did not like it, so now he has started several threads about it trying to warn everyone that the world as we know it is about to end. I know over 10 people using it now with no problems. YMMV
