I thought about the polishing then decided aluminum paint was the way to go, but after cleaning the fan and housing really well with Gunk engine cleaner and a soft brass brush decided it's clean enough for me. Not a concours guy I guess. When the fan was off I noticed one of the long alternator bolts was loose and after tightening it up and checking the others was able to get rid of an annoying noise caused by the rotor or stator or whatever it's called rubbing against the inside. And I replaced the toothed fan belt with what I think is the original factory belt that came in the tool kit - fan spins much quieter now.
