As a class of people, we have allowed lawyers to grant themselves the right to tax (or more accurately, skim off the top from) anyone or anything at any time.

I wonder if getting rid of one of the devices that allows this to continue, specifically the out-of-court settlement, would help solve the problem. If every case had to go to trial and have its relative merits proven or disproven, it would make filing (or threatening to file) lawsuits far less profitable.
