The one on the right is our dane rescue named Tallulah (I call her Tula). She was a bit of a mess when we got her as she had significant food allergies and the PO/Vets could not figure it out. Long story short, we got her on a raw food diet (as the other dane is on as well) and she is loving life. No allergies, shiny coat, lots of energy, put on some weight.

We spent a couple of years deeply involved in a great dane rescues organization doing home visits, foster parenting, adoptions etc and I loved doing it. But with two dogs and a small child, we have had to put that on hold for now.

The best story I can tell is how I met Tula: My wife and I had spoke about getting a second dog, mostly as I think two dogs are less work than one. My wife was unimpressed with my reasoning and dismissed the idea. "Maybe later" was her response. Well, fast forward a month or so and I returned from a week away at a sailboat regatta to hear our dog barking, which was no surprise. I walked in the house and up the stairs to see my big dog wagging his tail and not making a sound, but there was still barking in the house. Hummmm. I look around him to see Tula. My wifes grin told me that we had just gotten a second dog.

Turns out that my wife had transported Tula to a new set of adoptive parents that decided after a day, Tula was not "dane enough" for them. She went and picked th dog back up and took her home as there was no time to deliver her back to the foster parents that day. After spending some time with Tula, there was no way my wife was going to put Tula back into the adoption system and made the decision to keep her.
