We used to go to a place called Balch park, it was in the redwood Forest but not on the main road, very nice and good hiking but a PITA to get to (long very winding dirt road to get to it).
Probably much easier to to go the way Craig described.
Hug a tree when a ranger isn't looking
Pretty good fishing if you are into that sort of thing.. and watch out for bears
